Are you using Vista? If so, you have to open the file using 'run as administrator' in order to edit it.

Yes I am using Vista and now I changed "md5" to "trust", but nothing happened. It still asks for a password.

Stupid as I am I tried to uninstall postgress under "control panel/add remove programs".
Now I have a problem I cant install the program again.

I can see under programmes there is a folder named "PostgreSQL", so it is obviously not quite uninstalled.

What is my next step ?

How can I get it all uninstalled before installing it again.

Thank you again.

Turn off the UAC, then unistall it again using the Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs window. If it's not listed there anymore then just reinstall PostgreSQL. Then edit the pg_hba.conf file before you turn the UAC back on.
