Are you sure you have "PostgreSQL Unicode" selected as the ODBC Entry to use field on the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window?

Go to the registry path...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PTrack

On the right-side find the entry "PSQL_SETTINGS". Copy/paste the text of that field into a reply here.

What I see when I click on db settings:

I don't see a PSQL_SETTINGS.

and fwiw, i don't seem to be able to highlight any entries in the registry, so no copy and paste.

There should be PSQL_SETTINGS settings field, those are the old fields that were there before I started to allow more than one entry on the PostgreSQL Settings window. The fact that this is not being written and the other field was blank makes it appear that there are issues with PT being able to write to the registry correctly.

Go to the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window in PT.
Click the Remove button to remove the entry that is there.
Now click the OK button to close the window.
Reopen the window and re-enter your settings and click OK again to save everything.

Now check to see if the PSQL_SETTINGS settings field it there (you should be able to right-click and select Modify then copy the value of the field from the next window which you can then close without changing).

If the value is there now, then try PT again.

NOTE: If you haven't yet, before attempting to do a restore, make sure you go to Start > Programs > PostgreSQL 8.2 > Configuration Files > Edit pg_hba.conf and change both places at the bottom of that file where it says "md5" to say "trust".

There is PSQL_SETTINGS now. and the only other PSQL entry is PSQLBU with the path to my backup file.

I changed MD5 to trust in both places. (I thought I had done that earlier but with all the reinstalls I guess it got overwritten.)

When I start PT2 I still get the 999 - SQLSTATE = IM002 error. I can open PSQL db functions with no error.

Should I attempt the restore now?

You are still going to get the error opening PT because the database isn't there yet. Yes, do the restore now. Once it finishes (let the DOS window close on it's own), try closing and reopening PT and see if it opens without error then.

That did the trick. Seems to be restored and working now. Thanks for all the help.

Now, in your estimation, what is the "best" way to share a database between two computers?

You mean to be able to access the same database from both computers? I don't support that kind of setup.
The easiest thing to do is just a backup/restore to keep the database in sync.

My definition of "sharing a db between two computers" would include that method. Thanks.

I have downloaded PT2 to my second computer but I thought I might oughta ask what procedure I should use to install both it and PSQL and then restore my db.
Before I screw something else up. Thanks again.

You just install PT2 and PostgreSQL as you normally would. Then you just do a backup, take that .backup file to the other computer and do a restore. It's pretty straight forward, see the bottom of this FAQ for more details...
